HRM Approaches of Elon Musk

Introduction

Elon Musk holds the position of CEO in several companies, such as Tesla, SpaceX, and X, which was once called Twitter. He is recognized for his innovative ideas and for having a unique HRM approach. In management and leadership, one overseer of many goals has high expectations and is very hardworking. As a result, there have been discussions on the effectiveness of his HRM practices, which encourage an aggressive and results-oriented atmosphere in his companies (Grant, 2022).

Performance and Results Orientation
As per Musk, one of his prime approaches in HRM can be characterized as performance-oriented. The employees of such companies as Tesla or SpaceX are required to work almost all seven days of the week, including weekends and holidays regularly, while their working hours count between 80 to 100 on average with the aim to deliver results. Musk, himself, frequently exemplifies such attendance by appearing on weekends. This shifts the employees' scope of work, but in the long run, employee burnout and high employee turnover is a challenge for achieving greater sustainability of employee well-being (Duhigg, 2020).

Innovation and Creative Freedom
Take Elon Musk as an example: he promotes a culture of innovation, for instance at SpaceX, where engineers and developers are free to innovate, fail, and then attempt again. This is a creative process where some of the most remarkable breakthroughs in space technology have been created. By stimulating such an unusual, even radical approach, Musk makes it possible for employees to be more innovative within the boundaries of the company, which guarantees that his businesses remain leaders in their fields (Vance, 2015).

Micromanagement and Accountability
Musk appears to promote creativity in the workplace but is also known to involve himself deeply in the management of his companies. He moves around the workspace and engages in even the most technical details with the team. It could be said that in certain times, a direct approach may encourage employees, but at times it can be taken too far and employee morale becomes manager-directed (Isaacson, 2023).

Conclusion
The most characteristic feature of Elon Musk's HRM system is a combination of draconian performance expectations, elaborate accountability mechanisms, and space for creativity and innovation. Yes, his style of leadership does seem to promote fast growth and innovation but at the expense of burnt-out employees. Thinking back on Musk's HRM, I think it can give short-term achievements but needs to find a sweet spot for employee well-being and long-term accomplishment.

  2. Elon Musk's strategy stands out as bold and unconventional, yet it raises important questions about sustainability. In the short term, such intensity may yield results, but for long-term success, organizations must prioritize their most vital asset: people. Unlike machines, humans experience a rich tapestry of emotions—sorrow, fear, joy, and happiness.
They crave connection, empathy, and a sense of purpose, not robotic existence. Your insight encourages us to reflect deeply on the human element in the workplace. Balancing ambition with compassion can create a thriving culture where innovation flourishes and people truly shine.

  4. According to the content short term success is endured but not the long run sustainability. It is obvious as the discussion points in HRM approaches. But I do not feel it should be hurry to conclude the situation as so because there are some other factors such as employer brand image, compensation, welfare, etc for directly influencing for employee retention. Employee rotation also an action for minimize the employee burn out. How ever, let's see in the future what is happening to Elon Musk 🙂. Outstanding job. Well done.
